Driving to Birmingham Airport: Routes, Timings and Drop-Off
The M42 junction 6 is where Birmingham Airport journeys go wrong. Here is how long to allow.

A delayed flight home does not normally cost you anything at the car park. A cancelled outbound flight does need a phone call, and the sooner you make it the better.
This is one of the most common worries about booking parking in advance, and most of it is unfounded. The two situations work differently, so it is worth separating them.
Almost never, for a delay of a few hours.
Car parks expect delays. Every operator at Birmingham has dealt with thousands of them, and most sites allow a grace period of several hours past your booked return without charge.
Barrier systems read your registration rather than your booked time, so there is normally nothing to do at all. You drive out as planned.
The question to ask when booking is not "what if I am two hours late". It is "what if I am a day late".
Then you may be charged for an extra day, and it is usually modest.
An additional day at a park and ride rate is a few pounds. At a meet and greet operator it can be more, because a member of staff has to be there to return the car.
If you know mid-journey that you will land a day later, call or email. Operators are considerably more accommodating when told in advance than when a car appears a day late with no explanation.
Keep the delay confirmation from your airline. Some operators waive the overstay charge entirely when the delay is documented.
Rebooked later the same day — usually nothing to do, the booking still works
Rebooked for a different day — amend the booking to the new dates
Trip cancelled entirely — cancel the parking and claim what you can back
How much you recover depends entirely on what you booked, which is why the flexible option matters more than most people realise.
It depends on the rate you chose, not on why you are cancelling.
A non-flexible rate is typically non-refundable, including when the airline caused the problem. A flexible or amendable rate normally allows cancellation up to a set point, often twenty-four or forty-eight hours before arrival.
The difference in price between the two is usually small. The difference in outcome when a flight is cancelled is the entire booking.
Sometimes, under cancellation cover, though parking is often overlooked in a claim.
If your policy covers pre-booked costs when a trip is cancelled for a covered reason, parking generally counts. You will need the booking confirmation and proof the flight was cancelled.
Keep both. A claim submitted three weeks later without the confirmation email is considerably harder, and some policies exclude airline-caused cancellations on the basis that you should recover from the airline instead.
Usually not, though it is worth asking.
Airlines owe you a refund or rerouting for a cancellation, but consequential costs like parking sit outside the standard compensation rules in most cases.
Some airlines pay as a goodwill gesture where the cancellation was within their control and you can show a direct cost. It costs nothing to ask with the receipt attached.
Choose amendable, and give yourself slack on the return time.
Two decisions at booking remove nearly every version of this problem. Book the return for a couple of hours after your scheduled landing rather than on the hour, and pay the small premium for an amendable rate on any trip where your dates are not completely fixed.
On a long stay booking that premium is often a pound or two across a fortnight. It is the cheapest insurance in the whole trip.
You drive out, and you do not normally get the difference back.
Returning early is treated as using less of what you paid for rather than as a change to the booking. The barrier opens on your registration regardless of the date on the reservation.
Where it matters is at a meet and greet operator, who needs to know when to have the car at the terminal. Ring them as soon as your plans change rather than on landing.
Short delay home — nothing to do, drive out as normal
Overnight delay — possible extra day, call ahead and keep the notice
Outbound cancelled, same day — booking still valid
Rebooked another day — amend, if your rate allows it
Trip off entirely — cancel, then check insurance
Not for a few hours at most car parks. An overnight delay may mean one extra day.
Only if you booked a flexible rate. Non-refundable bookings stay non-refundable regardless of the reason.
Some track flight numbers, most do not. A quick call is worth it for a long delay.
Often, under cancellation cover. Keep the booking confirmation and the airline's cancellation notice.
Yes where your dates are not certain. The premium is usually small compared with losing the booking.
